Frequently Asked Questions about Tree Surgery

There are a lot of tree surgeons to choose from. Here’s some information to help you make an informed decision.

What’s the difference between a Tree Surgeon and an Arborist?

tree surgeon using a chainsaw to remove a section of timber from a tree

In some ways the terms are interchangeable. Tree Surgeon is a commonly used & less formal term referring to an Arborist.

In practice, however, an Arborist should be a professional in the field of arboriculture, which is the cultivation, management, and study of individual trees & shrubs, etc., and should hold professional qualifications. In the UK these terms are widely used and confused.

As a company, we much prefer the terms used by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) who differentiate between Tree Workers and Arborists.

Here at The Tree Fella NE Ltd, we are proud Tree Workers able to carry out tree pruning and tree removal work expertly. When expert scientific knowledge is required, we’d always refer our customers to an Arborist qualified to Level 4 or Level 5 for a professional survey back up by Professional Indemnity Insurance. Once the study has been carried out, and the doctor has prescribed the solution – we’ll carry out the work.

Why do I need a tree surgeon?

Tree work requires technical competence supported by a high level of training and lots of experience. For these reasons, tree work should only be undertaken by a qualified tree worker or arborist, with expertise in the area of work to be conducted.

If not carried out by a professional, tree work can lead to injuries to people, damage to property or severe harm to your trees.

No matter how small the job – it’s worth consulting a tree surgeon. Here at The Tree Fella NE Ltd, we’re not afraid to suggest if something can be done yourself to keep costs down – but equally, we’ll always be honest and inform you if it’s a task where you should seek professional advice.
